The Queer Survival Guide

The Queer Survival Guide profiles Ben, a Youth Producer from Staten Island, in order to examine how LGBT youth can find communities safe from harassment and discrimination. Defining communities as the home, school, and one’s neighborhood, the film documents the alienation Ben faces from his religious family, his Catholic private school, and the conservative neighborhood in Staten Island where he was raised. The film chronicles Ben’s journey as he resists this discrimination and serves as a guide for young people looking to find communities that are safe and inclusive for all.

A film produced by high school students who participated in EVC’s Youth Documentary Workshop, 2017.
