11 Mar Students Discuss Deaths of Unarmed Minorities by Law Enforcement at Community Forum
Last weekend, five EVC students in the New Media Arts Apprenticeship attended a community forum regarding the recent deaths of unarmed people of color at the hands of law enforcement. The forum took place at the Church of the Village in the West Village on 13th Street and 7th Avenue.
The students participated in great dialogue about potential solutions, including neighborhood policing, NYPD living within the boroughs they serve, and more community forums like these to provide a safe space for the community to voice their opinions and ideas.
There were also incredible reporting and interview opportunities. Students interviewed Brandon Del Pozo, who is a seasoned NYPD Deputy Inspector and former commander of the Sixth Precinct. They also interviewed Stan Smith, Director of Programs for Youth Inc. and Delores Jones Brown, a professor in the department of Law and Criminal Justice at John Jay College.
Students experienced the power of having a camera and microphone in hand, and they rose to the occasion. These reporting opportunities and necessary dialogue between students and community members about difficult issues illuminated the importance of an interactive community to find solutions.
